Photography & Art Direction

The work below spans over 15+ years of work as a photographer and Art director. In a digital context this has been pre-dominated by Art Direction of freelance photographers engaged to fulfill the requirements for imagery for digital design projects.

Art Direction projects include: Allen & Overy, Aquamerino, Camden Smokefree, BP Alive and NZ Inland Revenue's "Whatstax?" Campaign. In each of these projects a photographer has been briefed to provide appropriate imagery for the digital offering (and in most cases also used for offline collateral). A good understanding of compostion, lighting and above all 'subjects' has been invaluable in art directing third parties. Casting has also been appropriate for projects such as Aquamerino and Whatstax, where specific audience demographics required particular model qualities.

In addition there is a brief selection of the photographic work undertaken and developed over the last 15+ years. This has included several exhibitions and commissions - mainly for personal work rather than editorial - but has included shoots for CD sleeves, such as Jazz Tones and also work for theatre design, which has on occasion including posters and programmes. Portraiture and landscapes remain an abiding photographic interest - particularly using older non-digital equipment (such as a Leica M6 and Voigtlander Bessa-R) and black and white film. Knowledge and expertise in photographic printing techniques has also been enormously useful and most of the black and white work has been hand-printed.
