Médecins Sans Frontiers - MSF.org Website

Brief : As part of a pro-bono project for MSF, a project was commissioned to re-design the MSF.org parent site - enabling the easy implementation of Cold Fusion CMS and also reasonable performance on browsers & machines in Third World Countries.

Overview : The site was designed to have a fast download, minimal graphics but retain a strong reportage feel and work with the over-arching MSF global brand. A stark palette was chosen to enhance the strength of the MSF identity as well as using the award winning Magnum photography throughout.

Much work was done in designing scalable templates that could handle high-volumes of content, whilst remaining flexible enough to enable site editors to use images, styles and pull-quotes throughout the pages.

The header graphics needed to strike a balance of locations, people and differing issues - from war, to famine and disease through to less catastophic issues such as general education, healthcare and sanitation projects<./p>

Results : The site was succesfully launched in July 2001 on the Cold Fusion platform and its performance was indeed witnessed in a Third World Country - Zambia and Zimbabwe! The download speeds were acceptable and the site remained usable even on low bandwidth connections.

The site was featured in the Academy Award Winning film "The Constant Gardener" in 2006. The site was extremely long-lived (for a website) and was in this design and infrastructure from between July 2001 to July 2008!
